convert

tried pierre*hermes for the first time recently and was left questioning my l*aduree loyalty.

while my heart belongs to sprungli and her luxemburgerli, but when it comes to macarons, i thought i was deep in the l*aduree camp. however, an incredibly thoughtful gift from belle (thank you very very much! i will forever associate you with macaron joy!) made me cast all former belief to the wind as i fell head over heels in love with PH and his little mounds of heaven. for one it's less sweet than l*aduree and i appreciate the mealier texture of the macaronage. the exotic flavours are another plus (white truffle macaron, anyone?) and i've been pretty much blissed out the past 24h as i slowly made my way through the box.

now to figure out how to make PH a regular in my week...

sorted

just scored the sweetest deal on our house for next year.

the irony is that around this time last year, i was revising for the bar exam, and tenancy agreements were part of the conveyancing module. fast forward one year and i'm putting that stored away knowledge to good use by striking unfavourable clauses out of our tenancy agreement. what a power trip! life's funny sometimes ;)

back to our pad-to-be!

in order of priority, it's
1) huge (my new room is literally four times the size of my current!)
2) 50m from the pub / deli
3) 200m from the gym
4) 200m from medsch
5) 10min walk from the city
5) within our paltry student budget

there is so much space that we were tempted to turn cartwheels up and down from the front door to the back yard. the rooms are massive and it even has a garden (!!!). suppose one of the toss ups when it came to moving from where i'm currently staying (10min walk to medsch, 5min walk to city and right next to "the road with all the pubs and restaurants") to, basically closer to medsch, was that i go to school every day (yup, i'm keen that way!) and only go out a few nights a week. i believe this increased proximity to the medical library will have a direct beneficial impact on my grades ;) in theory, anyway.

but yay to wonderful housemates (one real, more than a few imaginary) and being sorted for the year. this house hunt had been driving me crazy and i'm relieved we held out for the one. then again, it probably boils down to being spoilt and refusing to walk more than 10min to class on a daily basis. and vehemently refusing to cycle. self-limiting as that may sound, it's really not so bad when i can roll outta bed and into uni all in the span of ten minutes.

had a lovely celebratory hot chocklit partayy after, and now off to my first ever christmas ceilidh, incidentally held in the church right next to house 2012/13!

all grown up

one of my dearest friends just applied for a hdb flat, and all the singaporean readers reading this will know what that means. truth be told, she first told me two months ago and i resisted saying anything about it till they signed on the dotted line today. am thrilled beyond belief, believe you me, this was a looong time coming!

but unlike the ring-eyeing, gown-chasing womenfolk, this cool chica was the slower half in her relationship. if he'd his way, i'm sure her soon-to-be-mister would've married her fresh outta jc if he could :) so yay to growing up and settling down, and to having a teensy tiny piece of real estate to call one's own.

because this particular friend goes wayy back,
dangling between balconies 10 storeys above the ground in ho chi minh city about 10 years ago, is something i'll never forget. and that fateful afternoon in the mt. sinai canteen, to which all this can be traced back to.

heartiest heartiest congratulations, and can't wait to see photos of your swanky pad. we'll throw you one helluva hen's do!

strange bedfellow

woke up in the country and found this little guy next to me. only in the country! got a little more excited than i should have and with lightning speed, i'd whatsapped the photo to the nearest and dearest.

what i didn't expect was that one of them (not gonna name and shame!) would send me a photo of the absolute hottie he woke next to. and then i felt my life was so sad and boring in comparison.

note to self: waking up next to attractive lady > waking up next to ladybug

calorific weekend

needed an "eye opener" as they call it here this a.m...

and some delectable PH macarons :)

chased by a mountain burger (in addition to a five piece chicken meal!)

more winner winner chicken dinner for dinner

chocolate cake and hot chocolate for tea

near china street and her delusions of grandeur

but despite the massive and constant binge that was this weekend, i've the biggest craving for red house crab :(

having only just started the module on nutrition and metabolism, i dare not put the weekend through the calorie counter, for a little knowledge can be a bad thing. however, in the spirit of thanksgiving, i've definitely eaten the caloric equivalent of an entire turkey, skin, drippings and all :)

(i blame the blasted cold for my sudden appetite increase!)

it's beginning to look

a lot like christmas!
just peeked at my time table and once i power through the 9-5 of next week, i've the following monday off then two hours of class on average the rest of that week, and monday and tuesday the week after. this brings us nicely to 14th dec where i've a one hour lecture and then it's helloooo month-long eurotrip!

meeting the folks in milan for two days, then they go home, manfriend comes up and we're continuing on to verona, salzburg and innsbruck, spending christmas in berlin, before making our way to iceland for new year's, and ending up back in london later in january. in true kiasu singaporean style, i'd booked milan dinners with the folks about two months ago, and mr. planner supreme has sorted all the flights, hotels and restaurants for his leg of the holiday. somewhere in there, i hear there's a 4x4 geared with sat nav and all ready to rumble around iceland in the deep of winter.

besides myself with excitement. less than 3 weeks to my family, exactly 3 weeks to kai and ohmyword i've minimal class for the next two and a half weeks. oh wow oh wow oh wow :) feel kinda cheated, actually. gimme more learning!

plus having worked 9am-5am once upon a time (qualifier: this happened maybe twice), i'm relishing 9am-5pm (sad as that sounds) because it's a relatively short day. have oodles and oodles of time on my hands here, hence my compelling need to do a ton of extra-curricular activity. and because it's less taxing to be a student, i find even 7 hours of sleep too much (somehow nowhere near the physical exhaustion i used to experience) and therefore have plenty of time to fritter away in delightful frivolity i.e. on the www. like now.

argh! so much energy! so much time! need. to. find. something. fruitful. to. do.

now let's just hope my room doesn't spontaneously combust while i'm gone... having already set off the fire alarm thrice (once with shower, once with hairdryer, once with quinoa burnt to crisp) i'm fast running out of housing office goodwill.

keep warm

it's cold outside

new toy

like every other camera obsessed iPhone user, one of the first things i did after picking up my new toy was to download every conceivable camera app and start snapping like there was no tomorrow.

hong kong express

and girl talk are two things i'm very thankful for this thursday evening. G and i had a lovely chinwag over a massive plate of fried rice with salted fish and chicken each, followed in quick succession by individual orders of fried beef horfun. the lao ban niang sort of didn't believe we were still hungry after the fried rice and thought our horfun orders were to go. and then when we said they were to eat in, she sort of tsk-ed at us and made me feel like i had somehow let team asia down. G then mused out loud, "i sometimes wonder why i'm not any bigger" and it's quite incredible that she's as svelte as she is, given her, um, healthy appetite. part of me still can't believe we each had two mains. and the other part is not surprised that i pick friends by how comfortable i am being a complete glutton in front of them.

that's always been a barometer of friendship - if i can pig out in front of you, i trust you enough not to fear judgment flying my way. which is why i really treasure friends like D and S, both strapping young men who look at me in slack-jawed wonder when i frequently out eat them. and then they independently concluded that my parents keep me in a state of nutritional deprivation back home. truth be told, it's just really cold here. and i'm in a perpetual state of ravenous hunger :(

respite

it was a crazy week with the first exam and first assignment due within two days of each other. but there was light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a weekend getaway to the country. much as i am a city person at heart, the countryside has really grown on me since i got to the uk. spending my first week here in solitude (omm...) in the country house was probably the most relaxed i've been all year. so i jumped at a chance at a repeat visit, and braved the overground train for two nights of peace and quiet.

L was waiting at the station and i couldn't have been happier to see her after two month of solo living. she's an angel and when i'm with her, she literally takes care of everything. she made it her personal mission to feed me like one would an ill-fated foie gras goose and when i left on sunday, i practically rolled outta the driveway.

so here's to friends who very kindly decompress me, and to waking up to this killer view every morning :)

the gift of good manners

chanced upon this and thought to share! lovely, useful guide and my inner (future) tiger mum can't wait to produce a lair of little angels who say please and thank you, and are capable of enlightened dinner table banter.

Holidays typically mean meals; meals mean table manners.   So let’s begin there:

Practice setting a simple table setting:  fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right (knife next to the plate), glass on the right above the knife and spoon. (The kids can help with the table decorations – make holiday place cards, ask the kids to make up a seating plan, create a special holiday centerpiece – not so high you can’t see over it!)

Then review the basics and practice, practice, practice:
Wash up.
Napkin in lap.
Wait until all are served or the hostess begins to eat.
Please and thank you.
Hold utensils properly.
Chew with your mouth closed.
Offer to help clear.
Thank you to the cook!
Table Conversation

The art of dining includes several things: the table setting which brings order and beauty, the menu which delights the taste buds, and the conversation that brightens the day! The following tips will help your children learn the art of table conversation.

Talk to people on both sides of you and across the table.
Volume: Not too loud; not too soft.
Don’t talk with your mouth full! (If it’s a problem, try putting a mirror in front of your child during a meal, so she can see how it looks.)
The art of small talk: Suggest topics like the weather, sports, local events, school and then practice. Avoid questions that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.” Instead use who, what, where, when, and how. Here are some practice questions. Help your kids make up their own:
“What did you think of the ball game last night?”
“What was the sledding like after that snow storm?”
“I heard you won the state spelling bee last week! That is so cool…What comes next?”
“Mom says you went to Spain last summer. Can you tell me about it?”
Avoid talking about personal family issues.
Practice at each meal this week. Who knows? Maybe you’ll learn something about your children you didn’t know. And, better yet, maybe they’ll learn something about you!

Gifts You Don’t Wrap
We all love to wrap gifts, but some of the things we can give at the holidays can’t be wrapped. By spending an hour with your children and talking about this concept, you will raise their consciousness about these special gifts.

Kindness
Consideration
Helping out
Preparing for company
Decorating
Helping with shopping
Cleaning the house

As part of the discussion you  have with your kids, create a list of these special gifts that they would like to give. Include the “gift” and who it’s for, when and how they’ll give it, and how they think it will be received.

Greetings and Handshakes
Greetings and handshakes are social skills – and like every skill it takes practice to get them right and to feel comfortable using them. Also, it’s much easier to learn and practice with someone you know well so try out that greeting and handshake in familiar settings with friends and family.

Let me say it again! Practice with siblings, neighbors, and dolls and stuffed animals – every day!

Greetings
Look them in the eye and SMILE!
Speak clearly
Say the person’s name
Add a “Glad to see you” or “How’s it going?”
If it’s a relative or close friend, add a hug.

Handshakes
Right hand to right hand – palm to palm; thumbs up
Firm grip – not too tight; not too limp
Two to three pumps then release

History of handshake: In olden days, knights extended a hand to show it did not hold a weapon and they were approaching as friends not enemies. The other person responded showing he didn’t have a weapon either. The handshake was a gesture of friendship in the olden days and still is today.

Greetings and handshakes are skills that will serve your children well far beyond the holiday season so take this opportunity to be intentional about teaching them. It’s really a gift for them from you!

Giving and Receiving Gifts:
Spend this last hour helping your kids learn gracious gift giving and receiving.
Gift Giving - In order to help your kids learn the joy of giving make the time to have them participate in gift shopping or making gifts they will give during the holidays. Then practice these interactions:

Look at the person and smile.
Hand them the gift and say clearly, “This is for you. I hope you like it.” Or “Here, I made this especially for you.” Help your kids with the language of giving.
Watch the person open their gift and feel the delight that comes with giving.
Gift Receiving - Remind the kids that when someone has given them a gift, she has spent some time picking it out, wrapping it, writing the card, or maybe even making the gift. It’s important to show your care and respect by opening the gift with a sense of joy and then expressing thanks!

Look at the person giving you the gift and smile.
Focus on the person and the gift – not something you opened just before.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. We don’t express our appreciation enough and you can’t stress it enough with your children! If you can’t thank the giver in person send a note right away!
(If they don’t like the gift, teach them to find the positive thing they can say, to say it, and then to say thank you. “This shirt is the best color blue. Thank you so much.”)
Five days; five lessons – with these basics your children will do well during the holidays. They know what’s expected and they have the skills to meet those expectations. They know what they can expect from others. There is a confidence that comes from the knowledge.

Approach this time together positively. Engage your kids in conversation about ways to make things smooth with people they know well and people they are meeting for the first time. You’ll be making the holidays less stressful for yourself and your children.

teapot shower

one thing i've yet to shake despite this newfound fascination with the outdoors is my two-a-day habit.

grown up on the equator where i'd bathe first thing in the morning and last thing at night. this cultural phenomenon has followed me to the uk, but the facilities, unfortunately, haven't.

for the weekend trip to kielder water, we stayed at a comfortable hostel with wonderful hot showers :) as the proud possessor of possibly the only hairdryer in the region, i was one squeaky clean happy camper.

this trip, however, we stayed in a stone barn that ran on a pound-guzzling energy meter i.e. feed meter pound coin, create light. the shower had no hot water and i have it on good authority that the only person who braved it was a lovely norwegian lady who is accustomed to swimming in the fjords. so what's a singaporean girl compulsive about cleaniness to do?

my roomie had the brilliant idea of bathing out of a teapot because there was hot water (in the kitchen, just not in the shower) but the only problem was that said teapot was tiny. which explains why at 730am when (i hoped!) everyone else was still asleep, i was shuttling between hot water source and shower trying my darndest to stay covered. having never bathed out of a teapot before, this was a novel experience for all of 5 seconds, before even my goosebumps grew goosebumps.

that chilly morning, i learnt that it only take 3 tiny teapots of water to have a good shower, and thick skin not to mind being seen prancing around in a towel with blue lips and chattering teeth.

the end.

ps swaledale photos up tomorrow if you'd like to see!

i'm thankful for

many good things on the horizon come 2012

on thanksgiving, i'll be attending a thanksgiving service at the city church for the families of those who donated their bodies to science. after that, it looks like it's going to be a blowout chinatown meal (i know, how traditional) with friends of non-chinese origin and good cheer all round.

what are your thanksgiving plans?

much as the uk tries to separate itself from the US of A (isn't thanksgiving an inherently anti-british holiday haha), it's no coincidence that the memorial service is on thursday.

unrecognisable

the manfriend is convinced that miracles do happen.

back from swaledale and once we regained mobile signal, i started tappitytap-ing on my phone to tell him all about it. part of this conversation may or may not have included how we walked for 6 hours, up about 500m and over 15km. it also may or may not have described how after walking what seemed like the whole day, i chose to walk the additional 3km to the pub (instead of hop on the bus), joined an impromptu yoga session back at the bunk house, woke at 7am the next day for a powerwalk, and bathed out of a small teapot after.

he then asked a series of questions to ascertain that i was indeed the girl he is going out with, before asking if anyone had been pointing a gun to my head the whole time.

pre-UK, i was probably the most inactive person on the planet, second only to the morbidly obese in florida who sit in their motorised chairs, surviving on soda and ice cream. was outdoor averse and would never do any of the above exertion on my own volition. but now, oh now, i'm keen as can be and can't wait to get out there again.

on the downside though, i was in agony the day after our long walk, an agony that no one else seemed to feel! oh how fit the lot of them were, bounding up the hills and even carrying weighted backpacks because there'd be no challenge otherwise. in contrast, i had to hobble down the stairs in the morning, hobbled the whole day and am still aching now. plus when we were going uphil for what seemed like forever and a day, i felt a remorse like never before for my daily bag of wotsits, kitkat bars and jelly donuts. why oh why do i eat so much junk, only to have it bite me in the backside when i go against gravity. methink these walks would be a lot easier if i was a wee bit more careful with what i eat.

but speaking of eat, the organisers fed us really well! we'd chilli con carne for dinner,  carbo-loaded for breakfast, followed by ham and cheese sandwiches with two candy bars, a bag of crisps, apple and banana for lunch. the maltloaf that was making its rounds was also a energy rush to the head. yay for sustenance!

am also more than a little embarrassed that i got my sleeping bag wrong (long story) and froze on the first night. it takes lots of effort to sleep in the wrong end of the bag, so please withhold judgment. figured it out in the morning and was snug as a bug in a rug the second night. mind you, this is the very same sleeping bag i got wrong when we did the machu picchu in winter 2009. ever gallant, the manfriend let me have our good bag in the sub-zero temperature (i was complaining enough as is being made to trek for 3 days...) but because i didn't know how to use it, we both froze regardless. key difference now: i'm walk uphill voluntarily

so this pleases the manfriend no end because he finally has a willing partner in grime. miraculous, isn't it.

nibbling on jelly donuts

from under a duvet is nothing short of happiness on a plate :) so what if they're a few days past expiry... think i'll subsist on donuts from now on and ward off the winter chil.

worlds apart v3

while i was swotting (oh, brit-ism) for the exam, the manfriend was callously sending these photos from his stag weekend in bali.

nice to know he's partying enough for the both of us.

swaledale

off to yorkshire this weekend! looking forward to the great outdoors and unbeatable banter. can't wait to break in my hiking boots, and this time we're staying in a bunkhouse so that sleeping bag couldn't have come any sooner. still don't have a head torch, and will probably be bringing my hairdryer, but little by little i'm feeling the wilderness <3 wash over me.

photos and stories to come!

math

has never been a strength and i realised today just how bad my simple arithmetic is.

was gifted with some pu er tea and couldn't wait to break into the stash.

however, despite reading the crystal clear instructions...

it failed to register that i should use only half the 8g packet at a time.

so i somehow ended up making over 10 cups of tea. it was like pu er on steroids! i kept brewing, and the tea remained nice and dark. so i poured and poured, and filled every possible container with tea and the leaves were still going strong. ended up drinking close to a litre of pu er, and promptly giving myself the most ghastly tummy ache. and i still had cups and cups left over :( oh how i occasionally loathe my waste not want not upbringing where i can't bring myself to throw anything away (hence my subsistence on leftovers and expired food). will be the first to admit that this compulsion to finish everything borders on pathological.

the only upside, however, is that this storm in a tea cup made me resume communication with the manfriend. had gone all huffy on him earlier in the day over something silly and was being a baby by refusing to reply his texts. but when i found myself bloated and with a windowsill full of tea, the only person i could think of calling was him. because he's bound to have a solution. he always has a solution! and he makes my problems go away (that's his job description, mine's to conjure mini-situations that require fixing). tail between my legs, i meekly emailed him the photos and asked what i should do with all the tea. and he told me what i wanted to hear: the sky won't fall if you pour the lot down the sink, so do just that then get ready for your night out.

awww :)

this is why he's the voice of reason.
